Costa Brava - Calella de Palafrugell

Yesterday we enjoyed a beautiful and varied walk from Tamariu to Calella de Palafrugell. Little more than 8 kms but took us almost three hours. We took our time - as you tend to do when you don't have far to walk - and stopped for a cold drink along the waterfront in Llafranc. The path had us scrambling over rocks, up and down steep stony paths, across beaches and then finally an easy paved walk for the last couple of kms between Llafranc and Calella.

A delightful surprise along the way to discover we were on a camino route - one of the many lesser known routes throughout Spain and elsewhere in Europe. The map (photos included) shows that it connects to the Camino Aragones in Jaca, (we walked to Jaca and the Aragones last year from the Camino Arles). We saw shell signs and yellow arrows in Figueres as well - perhaps part of the same route. Will have to do some research on that.

Tamariu is a small and charming village which we liked very much. Calella is much larger but also delightful. There are half a dozen small beaches in the main part of the town, as well as more 'hidden'  coves to the north and south. It's just a matter of walking and discovering. The water is so clean and clear - and fresh - deep greens and blues, as well as turquoise and even gold depending on the light. Calella has narrow winding streets of white buildings and bougainvillea, with beachy boutiques, a great choice of restaurants, and a few tapas bars. And the Hotel Sant Roc is a bonus!

We have one more day - and a half - on the Costa Brava. Tomorrow we'll walk from Calella to Palamos, about 10 kms to the south and stay there overnight before heading inland to Girona for two nights. From Girona, we'll take a short train ride down to Barcelona. The French and I LOVE Barcelona - it will be wonderful to finish our adventures with a few days in that fabulous city. And then - home.

Hasta luego
